"This DVD is a reissue of a 1995 VHS lecture given by Dr. Gordon. The most valuable aspect is his illustration of the Karl Leimer/Walter Gieseking principle of immediate memorization of a piano piece (inexpensive Dover edition: "Piano Technique" usually found under Gieseking's name although Leimer is the author).
The Leimer book uses several scores with full explanations which can be painstaking to read. Here with Dr. Gordon, we are able to see and hear what Leimer taught very simply. Gordon and his student show how the memorization is done. By the way, Dr. Gordon--having studied with Walter Gieseking--knows what he is illustrating! This section is found under "Analytical Memory" on the DVD.
Besides this unstated/uncredited Leimer memorization technique, more in-depth illustrations could have been included as regards music memorization which Dr. Gordon only touches upon and illustrates only once; thus the rating of 4 stars."
This outstanding lecture is ideal for those who fear memory loss in performance. Five memorization processes are outlined, followed by techniques that will aid in typical memorization problems. Suggestions for incorporating these ideas into the teaching process are also provided.
